The Copperhead Creek Series – An Interview with S M Spencer

S M Spencer grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where she rode horses along the beaches and across the tops of the rolling coastal hills of California. In the 1980s she was offered a job in Australia, the beginning of an adventure of which she has never tired. Still living in Australia, she writes from the semi-rural home she shares with her husband, horses, cats and dogs, as well as the kangaroos that pass through on nearly a daily basis.

She writes clean contemporary small town romance, as well as YA paranormal romance.

Q. What got you interested in writing?

My mother got me started reading at a young age, and I think it was reading Daphne Du Maurier books that really made me want to write. Or it could have been Winnie-the-Pooh.

Q. How long have you been writing?

I think I got serious about writing about 5 years ago. Prior to that I dabbled at short stories and took a few classes.

Q. Do you have any goals/projects in the pipeline?

I’ve started working on a new series, set in the California hills. I hope to have the first of that series out around Christmas with a bit of luck.

Q. What do you like most about writing?

I love letting the creative side of me loose. In my professional life everything was left brain driven—accounting, administration, marketing and sales—everything was precise and true and record keeping and reporting. But with writing, wow, you just let your imagination go wild and think of great heroines and the predicaments they can get in. It’s fun!

Q. What genre do you write?

I write mostly small-town romance, although I’ve also written a YA paranormal trilogy—Absent Shadows—about ghosts and vampires. And the last book I wrote was a murder mystery in the same small town as the earlier books in the series, and it still had romance in it.

Q. What draws you to this genre?

I suppose it’s what I always wanted to do myself—live in a small town, surrounded by a real community of caring people, with my horses and a hero.

Q. Where do you get your ideas?

A mixture of pure imagination and some things that have happened to me or people I know.

Q. Tell us about your process, how do you get into a writing mindset?

I’m not one to force myself to write. If I don’t feel like it, there are plenty of other things to do. But when I’m on a roll, you can’t keep me away from my laptop!

Q. What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just started a new series, set in the gold rush area of California. I had a visit there last summer and really took to the area. It’ll be the home for my next three books.

Q. Which writers inspire/influence you?

Ray Bradbury, Daphne Du Maurier were some of my earliest favourites. As for now, there are far too many to name.

Q. What else about your writing journey should we know?

My books are pretty clean—and by that I mean there is limited if any foul language, no sex on the page (there is sex, but it’s sort of fade to black sex if you like) and there is little if any violence although there are references to it.
